Zombieland!

Zombieland is a 2009 American zombie comedy directed by Ruben Fleischer from a screenplay written by Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick.

The film stars Woody Harrelson, Jesse Eisenberg, Emma Stone, and Abigail Breslin as survivors of a zombie apocalypse. Together they take an extended road trip in an attempt to find a sanctuary free from zombies; Columbus follows a set of "rules" designed to keep them alive where others have failed; Talahasee kills zombies in a variety of creative ways while trying to "enjoy the little things" in a ruined world.

The film received positive critical reviews and was a commercial success: it grossed more than $60.8 million in 17 days, surpassing the Dawn of the Dead remake to become the top-grossing zombie film to date.

OTHER INFORMATION:

  • Alternate tag lines "This place is so dead", "Nut Up or Shut Up".

  • The films budget was $23,600,000. It took over $24.7 million on its opening weekend alone, and was the biggest opening movie of any of Woody Harleson's previous films, including Indecent Proposal, which took a mere $18.3million on its opening weekend..

  • The film was originally called "Another Day in Zombieland", but the studios feared people would think it was a sequel, so they shortened the title.

  • Jamie Bell was originally cast as Columbus but dropped out prior to shooting. Taylor Lautner was considered to replace him but couldn't due other commitments.

  • The amusement park at the end of the film was the 'Wild Adventures Theme Park', which is located in Georgia. Most of the zombies seen during the end battle were actually locals.

  • The tune Woody Harleson's character plays on the banjo to lure the zombies out of the supermarket was the theme from Deliverance.

  • Director Ruben Fleischer said that he was apparently inspired to make this after seeing the zombie comedy "Shaun of the Dead". He originally intended this to be a pilot episode for a proposed TV series, but after that project failed to get off the ground, the script was developed into a feature film.

  • Patrick Swayze was offered a role as a zombie in the film, prior to being diagnosed with cancer, but he declined.

  • The number "3" that Woody Harleson writes on his cars was a reference to the late Nascar race driver Ralph Dale Earnhardt.

  • Woody Harrelson got arrested during filming for possessing marijuana, which cost the crew a day's worth of shooting.

  • The scene in the supermarket was actually filmed in a scratch built movie set because this was apparently cheaper than hiring out a real supermarket and than having to pay for all the damaged merchandise.
